  1. On a mission to Bischofsheim, Germany, Lt. Doerr's B-17, "Boomerang" began having difficulties after take-off and never made the formation. Eyewitnesses watching from Beachy Head claim they saw smoke coming from the aircraft before it crashed into the English Channel with an explosion. All crew were KIA.
